Second Phone Number: Virtual Number vs SIM vs eSIM

Two phones side by side, one with a SIM card and one with a virtual number app

A second phone number lets you keep work, sign-ups, selling or a life abroad apart from the number your family and bank already know. You can get one three ways: a second physical SIM, an eSIM, or an app-based virtual number. Numsify is the third kind: you rent a number on the website or in the app, on iPhone or Android, and use it alongside your current line.

How to get it:

  1. Open numsify.com in your browser, or install the Numsify app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create an account or sign in.
  3. Add balance on the top-up page using the payment methods shown there.
  4. Choose your country and open the details of an available number.
  5. Pick a 1-month, 3-month or 6-month plan, rent the number and start using it.

How to get it

On the website

Go to numsify.com, sign in or create an account, and choose to rent a number. Select your country, look through the available numbers and open one to see its details. Choose the plan length, confirm the purchase from your balance, and the number is added to your account once the rental is confirmed.

In the app

The Numsify app is available on iPhone and Android, as well as on the website. Install it from the App Store or Google Play, sign in, choose your country and pick a number.

Paying for it

Add balance on the top-up page using the payment methods shown there.

Before you rent

Open the number's details before you pay. They show what that particular number supports, and capabilities differ by number, country and provider. Some numbers may require ID verification under local rules.

Why people want a second phone number

Work and personal life

A separate line lets you stop answering clients at dinner. When the work number is in its own app, you can mute it outside working hours without missing a message from home. It also means a job change or a closed business does not force you to change the number your friends use.

Privacy online

Every sign-up form, delivery app and marketplace listing asks for a number. Each one is another place that number can leak from, through a breach, a shared contact list or a buyer who keeps it. A second number takes that exposure instead of your main one.

A number in another country

Moving, studying or selling abroad often means you need a local number before you have a local address. A virtual number can be rented from wherever you are, so it can be ready before you arrive.

Accounts you need to verify again

Some accounts send a code on every new login or device. If the second number is one you keep, those codes keep reaching you.

Second phone number options: SIM, eSIM or virtual

Physical SIM card

A second SIM comes from a mobile carrier. It gives you a full mobile line with calls, texts and mobile data on the carrier's network. You need a phone with two SIM slots or a second phone, and usually a local address and ID to sign up. It works without the internet, which makes it the most dependable for emergency calls.

eSIM

An eSIM is the same carrier service without the plastic card. Many recent phones can hold an eSIM next to a physical SIM, so two lines live on one device. Setup is a QR code or a carrier app rather than a shop visit. You still deal with a carrier, its contract terms and its coverage, and some phones lock eSIM to the carrier that sold them.

App-based virtual number

A virtual number lives in an app instead of on a SIM. Texts and calls travel over the internet, so you can use it on Wi-Fi or mobile data in most countries. You do not need a second slot or a compatible phone, and you can rent a number in a country where you do not live. It does need an internet connection to work.

How they compare

Question Physical SIM eSIM Virtual number
Needs a SIM slot or eSIM-capable phone Yes Yes No
Works without internet Yes Yes No
Includes mobile data Usually Usually No
Can be in a country you do not live in Rarely Rarely Yes
Set up from home Sometimes Often Yes
Emergency calls Yes Yes No

What each option cannot do

A SIM or eSIM is tied to a carrier in one country, and getting one abroad can take paperwork you do not have yet. A virtual number cannot replace your main line for emergency calls and depends on a working connection. Two-way texting and calls on a virtual number depend on the specific number, so you check before you rent.

Costs and commitments

Physical SIM and eSIM plans

Carrier plans are usually billed month by month and include a bundle of minutes, texts and data. Some need a contract or a credit check; prepaid plans avoid that but may expire if unused. If you only want a second number, you end up paying for data and minutes you already have on your main line.

Virtual number rentals

A rented virtual number is paid from your account balance for the plan you choose. Numsify offers 1-month, 3-month and 6-month plans. You are paying for the number itself, not a data bundle, because the app runs on the data or Wi-Fi you already have.

Which one to choose

Choose a physical SIM if

You need a second full mobile line in the country where you live, with its own data, and you want it to work in places with no internet. A dual-SIM phone or a cheap second handset makes this simple.

Choose an eSIM if

Your phone supports it and you want a second carrier line on one device without swapping cards. It is a good fit for a work line from a local carrier, or a travel data plan.

Choose a virtual number if

You want a number in another country, want it set up today from home, or mainly need texts, codes and internet calls rather than a mobile data plan. It is also the easiest to keep separate, because it lives in its own app.

Combine them

Plenty of people use a physical SIM for their main line, a travel eSIM for data abroad, and a virtual number for the accounts that belong to a different country or role. Each one does the job it is best at.

Running two numbers without mix-ups

  • Decide which accounts belong to which number and write that list down once.
  • Give each number a clear name in your contacts and apps so you always know which one you are using.
  • Use separate notification sounds so you know which line is ringing.
  • Turn on two-step verification for important accounts so a number problem does not lock you out.
  • Before you cancel any number, move every account that relies on it.

Setting up a virtual second number

  1. Decide what the number is for: work, selling, a country, or privacy.
  2. Rent a number in the country that suits that job and check its details for texting and calls.
  3. Install the app on the phone you already carry, and give it its own notification sound.
  4. Move the relevant accounts across one at a time, logging in again to confirm each one.
  5. Tell the people who need the new number, and leave everyone else on your main line.

Second numbers and messaging apps

A second number usually means a second messaging account; our guide to two WhatsApp accounts on one phone shows how to set that up.

Telling people which number to use

Decide who gets the second number before you hand it out, and say so once. Put it in your email signature, invoices or marketplace profile if it is for work or selling, and send family nothing at all, so they keep using your main line. When someone uses the wrong number, reply from the right one and ask them to save it. After a few weeks, most people will have switched without any further reminders.

Keeping both numbers secure

A second number is only as safe as the accounts on it. Turn on two-step verification for messaging apps, use an authenticator app where you can, and never pass on a code you did not request. If you lose your phone, your main number is recovered through your carrier, while the rented number is recovered by signing in to your Numsify account on a new device, so keep that login secure too.

Changing your setup later

Needs change. A virtual number you rented for a move may become your main contact for a business. A work eSIM may become unnecessary when you change jobs. Review your numbers every time something big changes: if a number still carries accounts, keep it; if it carries nothing, move on. The one rule that never changes is to move accounts before you give up the number they rely on.

A quick way to decide

If you can answer these three questions, the choice usually makes itself. Do you need mobile data on the second line, or only a number? Does the number need to be in a country where you do not live? Will you use it somewhere without reliable internet? Data and no-internet use point to a SIM or eSIM. A foreign number, or a number mainly for texts, codes and internet calls, points to a virtual number.

Whichever you pick, give the second number a clear purpose. A number with a job is easy to manage; a number used for everything soon becomes as exposed as your main one.

Best for

Work and personal separation

One number for clients and colleagues, another for family, on the same phone.

Numbers in another country

A local number in a country where you study, sell or used to live.

Privacy

A number you can give to shops, marketplaces and sign-ups while your personal number stays private.

Frequently asked questions

Can two numbers share one WhatsApp app?

Yes, on many phones. WhatsApp lets you add a second account in the same app, each account on its own number. If your phone does not offer that, WhatsApp Business alongside WhatsApp does the same job.

Will my contacts see the second number when I call them?

On an internet call from the Numsify app, people see the rented number rather than your main one. Calling from your phone's normal dialler still uses your SIM number.

Is a second phone number useful if I rarely travel?

Yes. Most people use one to keep sign-ups, selling or work away from their personal number, which has nothing to do with travel.
